panels from Manuel by Rodrigo Muñoz Ballester, 1985
One of my favorite comics I’ve discovered in the past few years! You can learn more and look at high quality scans at Jonathan Bogart’s blog, but here are some fun facts:
- Rodrigo was his pen name as a cartoonist. He worked more frequently as an architect and sculptor (shocker, right?)
- Manuel was serialized in an Madrid arts magazine called La Luna de Madrid, which also featured stuff from up and coming artists like Pedro Almodóvar.
- Magazines like this documented “la movida madrileña” in the late seventies and eighties. This was a counterculture movement that manifested as a surge of punk and queer art as Spain was transitioning to democracy. It had previously been under the fascist Franco regime for 36 years.

Tomorrow DEAD END: PARANORMAL PARK debuts on Netflix.
It’s funny, spooky, dramatic and diverse. It has a trans and gay protagonist from the jump. And we really hope we can make more. If you want more Dead End and shows like it, let’s make it a hit and stream it this weekend.
It goes without saying how much this show means to me. But it also means the world to the 150+ crew who tirelessly worked to make it a reality through a pandemic. Shows like this don’t happen in the UK very often and we’re all ready to make more! So we need your help!
Thank you!
